Tenney-Lapham Neighborhood Association's Day Shelter Website

Dane County has an accepted offer to purchase the 19,000 square foot Messner building at 1326 E. Washington Avenue as the future site of a permanent homeless day resource center, contingent on City and County approvals. The center is intended to be part of an overall system to link individuals to community resources and to move people as quickly as possible from homelessness or near homelessness to employment and permanent housing. The center, if approved, would provide for basic needs such as private, accessible showers; storage space for personal items; laundry facilities; and space to stay cool and keep warm, etc. The offer to purchase will need to be approved by the Dane County Board and they will need to receive a conditional use approval from the City Plan Commission and, likely, approval by the City Urban Design Commission. If approved, Dane County plans to open the comprehensive day resource center in October 2016.

*** In June 2016 the County proposed siting the day shelter at the Chamber of Commerce building at 615 E. Washington Ave., which the County purchased. This site is in the Marquette neighborhood. Their plans are now to site an mixed-income, mostly affordable, housing project on the Messner site - see TLNA's website for this project to see more details.
